“Be gentle with my emotions. I’m a poet you know. And I don’t see how heavily the cold snow weighs down the tree branches…” R.B. O’Brien
To a poet, the world speaks in images only ink can capture. Every thought, every breath, every lover’s sigh in love making, every sad moment, every doubt or fear, every time we fall in or out of love, every sound or sight in nature—little birds’ feet tap dancing or striking sunsets in clouds of smog or the too-hot sun or the loud crashing of the sea or the bright moon in a dark sky or leaves falling from a tree like unsent letters or the silence of a midnight walk in the city or every poetic love story that ends, or barren birch branches that expose peoples’ secrets and oaks in spring filled with the budding of new secrets—creates a thread of words like the thread one might use to sew a garment we still see so much life in. Poetry is a way to see not only a perfect beautiful, but to see the beauty in the broken, in the cyclicality of death and rebirth. It’s healing. It’s cathartic. It’s taking all the pieces to, somehow, make us whole, even if ephemeral, even if only until our ink must pour onto the pages again, even in the inevitable decay of flowers or sound of hymnal dirges, even in the beautiful blue bruises of January. And even-- as snow falls in winter. GET YOURS ON AMAZON

5.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary collection! Verified Purchase This is the fourth collection of poetry by this author and she just continues to get better and better. She has accomplished that greatest and most elusive pinnacle of poetry - finding her own, identifiable poetic voice; distinctly hers… When reading these gems her words pull your eyes down the page in a cascading cadence while at the same time you find her metaphors igniting images in your imagination like a series of quick snapshots as you read. It takes superior poetic talent to accomplish this with what is often a rather sparse arrangement of words. Yet every word is loaded; every word counts. It’s so refreshing and much too rare, to read a poet, who, when writing a poem, gets in and gets out. And she always gets out just at the right time. She perhaps leaves you a little sad sometimes but always satisfied. Because these poems contain truth. They are infused with it. Though most of these poems mention snowfall and snow the warmth of the poet herself and her enduring spirit offsets any permanent chill. We can’t help wondering if her more wistful laments refer to one great loss; a single individual whom she misses, or the sum of her life’s inevitable disappointments. All of this pervades through a unique, and deceptively simple style. She scales the heights of love and plumbs the depths of loss brilliantly. Along with that vast expanse of desire which resides in-between. Where resides the heart of a true inspirational poet. And always devoid of self-pity. Ms. O’Brien, as mentioned in the collection’s closer worries about her poetic legacy. Well as long as anyone owns this stunning collection that legacy will remain intact. These poems are not only to be read and savored; they are to be studied. I would add a sixth star if it were possible. Add this masterwork to your contemporary poetry collection now! 5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry as Magical and unpredictable as Snowstorm Verified Purchase This is the most beautiful collection of poems that R.B. O'Brien has penned to date. It's almost as if you have walked through the wardrobe and have been transported to that magical feeling you first had as a child when you entered Narnia. Every poem is laced with the delicate snowflakes of winter. It's as if Jack Frost himself danced across the pages as R.B. wrote. She transports through every emotion, whether it be the innocent whimsy through the eyes of a child or the winter warmth of a lovers embrace. She is a master at making you feel as if these words she writes could indeed been something you yourself wrote. This is a must have book of any poetry lover or fan of Ms. O'Brien's work. 5.0 out of 5 stars In Love in Winter! Verified Purchase I love everything about this collection! I devoured some poems, while others I pondered over every word. I can't accurately say just how much I treasure each written line and how wonderfully intricate these poems are, but I'd happily compare them to a favorite work of art. O'Brien need not worry about her legacy, because her poetry will live on forever. 5.0 out of 5 stars Word woven like a magical snowy winter day Verified Purchase Poetry filled with so much emotion that you can tell it’s written from the author’s heart. The words weave such an amazing journey and wrap around your soul. There aren’t many poets that I not only automatically 1-click but have to own a physical copy as well. 5.0 out of 5 stars A rare and beautiful poetic talent Verified Purchase I have all R.B. O’Brien’s poetry books to date. Each time I think the poetry cannot be surpassed—and then it is. She has a rare and unique poetic voice; seemingly simple at first, but as the poem trickles through the brain it develops a depth and power that is unsurpassed, in my opinion. Even if you are not normally a poetry lover, read this collection, and I am sure that at the end you will be as enthusiastic as her existing readers. Definitely not to be missed. |

R.B. pushes me to want to be a better poet. Her words take me by the hand and lead me to romantic places I've dreamed of only. Even though she calls this collection Almost Poetry, it is wonderfully creative and I am convinced R.B. does in fact bleed poetry.

Better then John Donne by George Hancock
One of the most intense books of love poetry I have ever read. So intense, in fact, that I had to stop reading for a while to let my emotions settle.
We are a lot alike I think, Rosemary and I, except I never had the ability to express my emotions the way she is able to do. I feel absolutely similar to most of what she expresses, but my emotions remained sealed in memory and only occasionally escaped into verse.
Everything she has written I love, but one of the poems that most struck me is entitled Good Girls In Catholic Skirts. It is in this poem that she first begins to revolt against “years of moral engraining” in much the same way it happened to me in adolescence.
I can almost smell the musty, bookish scent of the church where I too first began to reject my strict Christian upbringing. She has brought that memory to life in a way that helps me to understand that others, of other genders, also feel the need to break out.
Her love poetry, of which the above is not a true sample, is absolutely incredible. Personally I feel there are few English-language writers that can surpass it. She writes cleanly, simply, but so sensuously that it is impossible not to experience love the way she describes it. There is no false ranting, no mourning the lost self, no self pitying verse, no calling on false gods for mercy. There is just the simple, clean, pure emotion of love in all its glory.
I must confess that I had put off reading this book. Why? I think maybe I subconsciously knew what power it would have over me. I have grown cautious about reading poetry because so much of it seems to me to be inward looking and self pitying. I have read other books by Rosemary, but none of them—and they are all brilliant— have the power of this one.
It’s a book, like my treasured book Four Quartets, by TS Eliot, or The Way of Life, by Lau Tsu, that I will return to again and again. Rosemary is not just a good writer, she is a poet of incredible power, all the more outstanding because she speaks a language we can all understand.

Each poem - heartfelt emotion captured in ink... by Darlene AJ
Sometimes you can feel a little intimidated and over whelmed on a subject you’re not fully conversant in. As a voracious reader, I’d never experienced that until now. Insert that word - POETRY! Until recently, it was a form of words I’d not read in such a long time. I’m so glad to have found poetry again.
I’m sure to mess this up… let me gather those out of depth thoughts and give you my impressions.
Words that hold no bounds, words that hold intensity, words that come alive, words that play and words, that one needs to fully immerse yourself in, to find the beautiful meanings and hidden thoughts expressed within their descriptive verse.
Oh WOW!! I’m in the presence of awe-inspiring words within the confines of Ruin My Lipstick. Each poem, a representation of heartfelt emotion captured in ink that fill this author’s blank pages. The words are raw beauty, angst and all visually captivating to one’s mind and thoughts. i so wished this book had artwork to make those gorgeous words an even more appealing journey. Highly evocative and sensually provocative. Your emotions and senses are piqued, as your thoughts flow to grasp their meaning.
Some of the poems are short, easier to quickly comprehend, while others will leave you pondering for a while to fully appreciate their worth.
R.B O'Brien already gives us sexy, erotic page-turning novels…. now she delivers you this page turning celebration of poetic verse. Take some moments, to not only purchase this book of poems... go and find yourself a cozy place, tuck yourself under the covers and be captivated and astounded by beautiful words and verse. I highly recommend RUIN MY LIPSTICK.

~~~ SIGH~~~ by Robin C. I have waited impatiently for this books release and man was it worth the wait. R.B. O'Brien's RUIN MY LIPSTICK: A Poetry Collection is a work of art. It truly touches the soul. There is a verse for all occasion in this wonderful collection. There are some short but powerful verse. LOVE POEM- "How long must a love poem be? she asked most precariously". There are words that talk about growing up differently- NOT LIKE THE REST. R.B. O'Brien also did not forget the Haiku lovers in this collection- THE SCENT. Lastly, I want to mention I felt like the author climbed into my soul and wrote some just for me- HE'S MY PERFECT and MY OBSESSION, where she describes my love as if she knew him. Poetry is personal, poetry can be overwhelming and poetry can be a bit scary, because we often mistakenly believe it must be perfectly understood in order to enjoy. However, O'Brien shows us that poetry is for everyone, and we can just let the beautiful, powerful blend of words become music to our soul. I highly recommend RUIN MY LIPSTICK: A Poetry Collection. Wow! Love it ! by Thomas Muriuki No contemporary collection of poems flows as naturally as Ruin My Lipstick! A concoction of raw, uncensored emotion put into words in a refreshing style ! Highly recommended for the love of poetry ... |
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2021Novelist/poet R.B. O’Brien continues her journey of verse with Almost Poetry, a collection of terse but powerful writing exploring all things romantics love: heartbreak, kissing, ennui, the human body, sensuality, the power of memory, and moonlight. Almost Poetry reads as part midnight diary, part sentimental travelogue of thought and inspiration, and part photo journal chronicling handwritten flourishes and doodles dancing around the printed page. While O’Brien’s concept for these verses is clear from start to finish, the true allure of these these words is in what is missing. These bite-sized pieces act as kindling for our own reverie: O’Brien throws out an image, we run with it and add the rest of the story. Her words are clear but the outcomes are ambiguous, her images are strong but are merely a catalyst for our own afterimage, and herein lies the magic of her talent. The beauty of these pieces pops in our coloring outside the lines of her own daydreams. Make ‘em any hue you’d like.
Life through the eyes of a poet
This is one of those poetry books that I know I will dip into many, many times. I simply LOVE it. R B O’Brien has given us an intimate sight into her mind and her heart. It is full of, not only the most delightful thoughts on life and love, but includes the scribblings from her notebook, and sketches to illustrate her thoughts. She has a rare talent to capture intimate thoughts in a rawness that twangs at the heart strings. The way the book is presented is simply unique, and is a triumph. Wonderful.
Emotional, lovely!!
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2021Almost Poetry by R.B. O’Brien is full of a vast array of beautiful, short, deeply emotional, expressions. My favorites were Love Hurts, Deep, Life Together, Black and White, Tears, Disappointment, Breathless Abandon. All were truly moving!!! R.B O’Brien delivers poetry, poetry she considers her almost’s. Brief details and poetic notes of her thoughts. Thoughtful reflections and introspections that circulate inside her poet’s mind, at any given moment, any mood felt from deep within. Not only is this done with beautiful typography,
R.B. adds affection and closeness for her readers, with the provision of photos showcasing her handwritten thoughts from inside her journal. This touch is personal and intimate… poetic!
R.B.’s poetry is something I always read daily. This collection proved to be so different. It was read at a time when life tilted and I lost my mum. Hours were spent reading over R.B’s poetic fragments, absorbing and considering each poem. Small smiles emerging through the tears being shed. Tears that fell like rain drops. Tears that wash in grief, emotions that also cleanse in new days, with its wonders and perceptions. Poetry needn’t always be long to grab hold of your mind and heart… its vibrancy can be found inside the shortest of poetic lines and verse. Almost’s that are beautifully freeing. That’s what this collection represents for me as a reader of poetry. A collection of Almost Poetry that I recommend to be in your hands… |
Poetry needn’t always be long to grab hold of your mind and heart…
Throughout history, men and women, those that are poets and writers, express the depth of their emotions with poetic words. The roller coaster of life, love, angst… wishes and desires. Thoughts that free flow in the creative mind. Words woven, then spun into poems to then be scrawled inside personal journals and diaries. Almost always if you’re fortunate… they’re handwritten.
Beautifully eloquent. by K.Z. Howell
Most poetry collections seem to follow a singular theme of either soaring bright imagery or the depressing darkness of bitter loss. Ruin My Lipstick follows neither. I enjoyed Miss O'Brien's poems immensely because she chose to write the way lives are lived, in bursts of brilliant sun interspersed with countless shades of gray. From the twirl of a yellow dress dancing in sunlight to the shadowed questioning of a dark night sky, Ruin My Lipstick delivers a vivid portrait of a heart well traveled and a life lived fully. Love, honesty by RDV Having read a few of this author's poems before, I knew that I would be in for a treat,with her first published book of poetry. In fact I was blown away. There is beauty, romance, emotion, eroticism, love, honesty, passion and more. This is a book that I will return to again and again. It was moving, sometimes raw, gentle at times, intense at others. You must read it. |
Poetry that evokes emotion and imagery❤ by Sharlie
While in school, as a teen, I always dreaded the poetry unit that came around every year. There was no way that I could understand much less write the poetry assigned. Author R.B. O'Brien makes it so easy to read and understand her new poetry book "Ruin My Lipstick". Each of her poems evoke an emotion and imagery that I can feel and see. Well done R.B. O'Brien! I look forward to much more💋❤ Such beauty contained in this book! by Xtina Marie Wow. Just. Wow. As a poet myself, I can honestly say that I have never ever been moved so completely by poetry. And I read fast, because I needed to know how they ended. Such beauty contained in this book, I cannot wait to read it again and again. Lipstick Ruined by Jodi Ball Wow! I love this lady's work. I wanted to pick out the one I liked best, but it's too hard a decision. Love all the intense feels that come with these poems. |
