Never put passion before principle. Even if win, you lose. - Mr. Miyagi.

Do you remember the old Karate Kid trilogy? Some of us may be more familiar with the remake than the originals, but watching them, as dated and as cheesy as they may seem, there is much we can learn. When Mr. Miyagi says that in Episode II it really sticks, because we could use a Mir. Miyagi right now.

When I think of the word "passion," I think of writing and dance and things in my world, like the environment that I care deeply about. Follow your passion. LIve life with passion. I'm passionate about...And so on. I've never really thought of the word in a negative way. But then, of course, when I really think about it, it's always been used in both ways, hasn't it? "Crimes of passion" for instance, or in the "heat of passion."

But it's true. Sometimes, our passions can compromise our principles. They can make us blind. Inconsiderate. Selfish. Self-absorbed. Narcissistic. And perhaps, like anything, drinking, for instance, or even loving someone or caring about a cause, we might get carried away, lose sight of truth, get lost. And with being lost, we might lose our principles. I'm sad to say, I see it in the writing community. Cheating the system. Paying for reviews. Paying readers. Some get caught, and for a second, we think the world is righting itself. But they only reinvent themselves and go at it again...But there are far bigger problems than that nonsense.

What happens when it seems principles are forgotten at large? Who decides on what principles matter and which do not? I care deeply about certain things that others do not. Does that mean my principles are correct and theirs aren't? It's murky, isn't it? And, I'm afraid, America's principles seem to revolve so heavily around money, that the ol' mighty dollar now seems to be synonymous with the word passion at the expense of principles. The environment. Human kindness. Treatment of people and animals. Hey, if we're making a buck, who gives a fuck, right? -- WRONG!

While watching a new series featuring Zac Effron, Down to Earth (I know. I want to start singing HIgh School Musical songs too), it becomes all too clear. The first two episodes, the first Iceland; the second France, shows me that America has gotten so far off track, environmentally, healthily, humanitarily, (word or not, I don't care), equally...it truly begins to frighten me sick.

If other countries can provide and live off 100% renewable energy, like Iceland (and I don't want to toot my own horn, but for my Edge of Torment series, I did quite a bit of research on Iceland for my protagonist, Michael, who studied there, and whose life mission focuses on green and renewable energy--if you'd only read it--:) ); and France--Paris giving water (good, clean nutrient water) to ALL, free and easily accessible in public places like parks, etc.--why aren't we doing better? Why are we going backwards? Why are we pulling back from all these things we've learned and know, KNOW, we should be doing? We can do our part. And I've blogged about that here, but the government should be doing its part, should be doing more, not going back in time!
Picture
But we don't care about what other countries are doing. We're the most powerful country on Earth. We're rich. Fuck the past. Fuck the future. I want to make money! My passion is excess at the expense of everything and everyone.

When money is the only passion we make decisions from, we're in trouble. And, folks, we're in trouble. Where's Mr. Miyagi when you need him? I'm afraid, he's nowhere to be found. And soon, neither will we.

I totally agree. If a person loses their sense of ethics and moral centre, then they lose their soul, it seems to me. Being caring, kind, gentle with our fellow humans and with our surroundings is vital, if we want to survive as a species. We do not need to trample our fellow humans (or animals) to reach our desired goals. There is enough for all, if we could only learn to share. That is a strength, NOT a weakness.

You have written some dark truth in your blog post today. I agree with you, almost everything in our society (US) seems to have been warped or gotten out of hand. The worst part, to me, is that it feels so hopeless to people like me. What can I possibly do about changing it? Yes, I can vote. But will it count for anything? I voted at the last presidential election, not for the present White House occupant, and look what happened there. I almost feel as though my vote counted for nothing and the presidency was stolen. I donate to the candidates and causes I support, but I can't afford much. Compare my little pittance to multi-million dollar donors on the other side. I've worked in campaign offices, knocked on doors, and volunteered to drive people with no transportation to the polls. It's all I'm capable of, but it's oh-so little. I was listening to some old rock from early 90-91 on the radio, Scorpions were playing their song "Wind of Change."
Remembering that period of time around Perestroika, just after the Berlin Wall fell, and how so many people experienced the buoyant feeling that peace was within reach and maybe mankind really was improving. Maybe peace and cooperation were really going to be our future. It made me so sad to hear that song now and to know how horrible things have been in the last few years and how awful they are likely to become. With children separated from their parents, held in cages, and hate for others spread far and wide, with a leader who knows nothing about how to handle this virus and doesn’t give a shit about it anyway; all he cares about is money—probably more than he cares for his own children. And Russia has fallen back into the hands of a dictator who is hell-bent on our destruction. I’m 69, and as far as these issues go, I feel pretty depressed and useless. I can only hope younger generations can turn things around for this country.

Oh, Emily! Your response is heart-wrenching. Please don't lose hope or give up. I teach for a living, and I have MUCH faith in the younger generation. They are involved. They care. And we musn't give up. Your vote does and will count. It must! Thank you for commenting. I really appreciate you sharing your perspective.

Thank you, R.B., for letting me sound-off about our current state of affairs! I am pretty sad about the way things are, but I don't think I'll give up. As depressed as I sometimes feel about things, my feelings of curiosity about how things are going to turn out--next election, next year, next crisis--are stronger. LOL! I am glad to hear you have faith in our youth, and glad that someone like you is preparing them for the future.

I totally agree. I feel solar energy is important, but why do we have to rely on other countries to manufacture our own? Why are we slowly moving towards a cashless society? What about the people who have little or no money and therefore have no credit or debit card? Protests? What are the true reasons for protests and violence? Is it really a racial matter or is it financially driven? In my personal life, I've been accused as being mean, no matter what I do or say, I'm told I'm being mean. I'm in a bad state right now, have been for some time. Writing provides me with a form of escape from that.

Don--Thank you for the comment. Have you listened to Ice Cube's song No Lives Matter...rather dead on. Let me know what you think. Your comment reminded me of it.

Principles are based on ideals, what we aspire to be rather than what we are in our worse moments as fallible, flawed human beings. Emotions can make it difficult to live up to our ideals.

What a poignant observation. Thank you. What we are in our worse moments is 100% true.

I want to eloquently respond to your thoughtful blog post but I'm so angry with the state of our nation. If the statement that in a time of crisis true colors shine, we should feel such shame as a nation.
I do my part and know it is not enough, but it's the best I can offer. I care for my world, i wear a mask when near others during this pandemic without acting like an asshole, I recycle, I adopt animals no one else wants or values and I teach my boy my truths and to be thoughtful and kind. As I see him grow and become a great man, maybe what I have to offer is enough.

Robin, you are always eloquent...and I've "seen" your boy and gotten to know him through you. Trust me. YOU are doing enough...and HE will do what, maybe, we couldn't. xo
