Eating with a Conscious Conscience

Today I ponder what we eat.

How many among us are moving towards a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle? Why is that? Why do many of us still eat meat? Is it simply because it tastes good? Is it a way to get the most nutrients and proteins as easily and quickly as possible? Do we HAVE to eat meat because of our diet restrictions as some of my friends tell me? Where do you fall into this spectrum? And why?

My thoughts stem from a conversation that started with a “friend” of mine who used the word “fat” to describe someone at an environmentally-conscious-eating-healthy-and-organically event for lack of clearer description. When he used it, the whole table hushed. It was as if the word fat was a swear word, that to use it was offensive, insensitive. I remember as a child my mom saying once when watching a dance recital video back of mine that she couldn’t attend: “Who’s the fat one?” She didn’t care how graceful or perfected her form was…ballet dancers aren’t supposed to look like THAT. I’m not sure our perceptions have changed all that much.

This friend (really friend of a friend) said it matter-of-factly, and people, after the hush, started to berate him as being judgmental, that he was being discriminatory against a group of people. He quickly rose to defend himself. He argued that being fat was a sign of unhealth. That it was a choice one makes. That “his taxes” were paying for "their" ailments. As the discussion got more heated (it’s a wonder, really, we all stayed seated at the table), we got onto other topics, topics of poverty and how our country makes it a luxury to be healthy. The impoverished communities having to rely on fast-food and cheap eats, and the rise of inner-city co-ops, which are a great idea, but which aren’t sustaining themselves, sadly. (at least not near me). That organic food is damn expensive. That eating healthy costs bucks. That THAT is the issue… The discussion progressed, morphed, spiraled, and it really made me think.

This event I went to was all about gardening co-ops, healthy lifestyles, vegetarian eating and the alkaline charts, and living naturally with and on this Earth...and I heard a child ask: “But Mom, aren’t we killing plants too? Then what will we eat?” I stopped dead in my tracks as I often think about that too. The flowers in my vase, the many living things we kill for our aesthetics. But I thought on it and wondered how the mother might have answered.

When we kill an animal to eat, that’s it. We take their life, and still, in some instances, in brutal, slaughterhouse, disgusting fashion. That's not about affordability. That's about greed. And we have evolved enough to know the intelligence and feeling capabilities of our warm-blooded friends. The pig. The cow. They cuddle. They think. They love. They feel. They are “sentient” beings. Plants are not, and science backs this. But further, some of our plant friends can bear us fruit year after year if we tend to them. That peach, for instance, grows back for us every year. The apple orchards, if tended,  produce and continue to bear us fruit. And that rose oil can still bring us health benefits from afar as long as they are tended, preened, and fed.

It’s harmonious…and that, if it were my child, would have been my answer. Besides all the health benefits of going towards a more vegetarian life, it’s the ethical ones that have guided me towards my goals. I’m not hear to judge or have a contentious debate…I’m here to live my own life with my own conscience. And I ask you to think about yours consciously…after all, we're all here to grow.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. It’s expensive to eat healthy especially during winter months. I am one of those ‘fat’ people but not by choice. My rebuttal to that asshat would’ve been if not for an unforeseen injury I would be still a viable taxpayer not seeking government assistance. Don’t lump us all together because ‘fat’ comes with many burdens the likes of him will never know. Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, oestearthritis, thyroid problems. I am trying my best not to be ‘fat’ but there is no quick fix. The best thing to do is help the American farmer so all the world can eat better cooperatively.

Dear Rosemary
I tried to answer this before, but somehow got derailed. The word "fat" is one I have striven to eliminate from my vocabulary. That is because there is so much twaddle spoken about "fat" that the concept is meaningless. I was born with a bulky body. During my boyhood I was always called "fat" and people always assumed it was because I overate. Nothing could have been further from t he truth. As I grew older I slimmed somewhat, but I was never what you'd call "normal". Now I'm 85 and I'm still chubby but all my "normal" friends are dead? Who is the healthy one? I will bet that I will outlive your friend's friend who thinks "fat" people are unhealthy and using up his Medicare dollars. How typical to use the money argument to justify a position! People are genetically engineered into body types. There is not much they can do about it unless they become exercise maniacs nd spend their whole lives worrying about the shape they're in. That's a recipe for an early death.

One other thing. The older I get the less I depend upon flesh for nourishment. I'll never become a vegan, but I tend to use more and more vegetable and dairy products and thoroughly enjoy them. My real beef with vegans (pun intended) is their preference for organics. Personally, I regard organic products as an excuse to charge more. Good old Greed. Take carrots. Left alone they grow wonderfully in almost any soil, better in rich soil, of course. Label them organic and suddenly they become thirty percent more expensive. That is simply a ripoff,, and it's happening with more and more vegetable products.

Sensible individuals should pause before buying organic. and ask themselves if it's necessary. Farmers have been growing vegetables for centuries and are pretty careful about what they use to protect them from disease and pests. Organic growth is a fad being used to increase the price of food for everyone. We should not encourage it.

R.B. first forgive me for my posts of me cooking meat, for that I will stop as now that I look at it can be offensive to some. Now to the fat and vegetarian of life as I have lived both.
First fat when I was younger I was very thin, to the point of being fifteen pounds under the current BMI for my height. Now by the BMI I’m morbidly obese, I’m currently sixty pounds down from my heaviest and working on a better me. I’m a foodie and enjoy my food and it’s no one’s fault but mine and I’m working on it.
Now vegetarian, I was one for about 6 months and the only reason I stopped wasn’t because taste or anything like that. I stopped because I was the cook for three and it took a lot of work, time and effort cooking and eating out. I was working fifty hours a week and driving close to 20 hours a week, bad marriage and the ridicule of not eating meat. I know all excuses that I should not worry about, and I’m working on me one day at a time.

There are so many aspects of the vegan/vegetarian debate I find worthy of discussion. Personal health. Compassion for animals. Environmental impact. Sociological issues. Economic and logistical challenges. Indirect peer pressure.

Culture. Tradition. Conditioning. We’re fighting these in many other aspects of our life we may be wishing to change. But when deciding to wean (can anyone quit cold turkey?) ourselves off meat there are a lot of impediments.

Although we can always find some faults with it we are fortunate to live in the data and Information age. And, yes, there’s so much of it that it inevitably contradicts itself and confuses us even more.

However the majority of it supports the fact that limited or no meat consumption can only be beneficial toward our overall health and longevity. We can get all the nutrients we require through plants and plants alone.

It has taken too long but we have finally become more aware of the intelligence and emotions of animals. They can know fear. They can know terror. They can experience severe discomfort. Even depression. They give us so much while we return so little. All animals, whether alone or in groups perfectly contribute to the balance and harmony of nature. Each species was able to survive only because nature has thus far allowed it. But not human nature. Mother Nature!

Yet we destroy nature by trying to raise and increase the population of animals our way; only to slaughter and consume them. To have them endure the most hideously horrible living conditions imaginable. We are destroying both nature itself and the life it sustains. We’ve unbalanced it. I won’t go into the details since you can research them yourselves. When you see the amount of resources depleted, pollution generated, suffering created, etc. just to put one lb. of meat on your plate perhaps a change of heart can begin to emerge…

And if it does… Eating healthier is hard! And maybe even more expensive. Organic food (if you’re taking it to that extreme) costs more. The shopping. The planning. The storage. The need for variety to make it successful. The need for nutritional awareness and knowledge. Exploring and trying all the vegan recipes. Willing to give it the time. But what better way to extricate ourselves from the detriments of our fast food/junk food culture? We really are still not cognizant of how far down the wrong road we have travelled. And our current corporate culture will do everything in its power to accelerate our pace thus.

And the sociological difficulties! If you opt for a vegan lifestyle there are several of those to consider. If eating with friends or family out or at home YOU may ironically end up with less choices! It’s harder to find a food venue which will satisfy everyone when going out. It doubles
your effort to satisfy your diverse guests if you are hosting. It could even leave YOU out of the plans made by others or have you hesitate to include certain people. All because of food!

Tired of reading yet? You need a falafel break maybe?

So. All my rambling above is nothing unique.
Thus I’d like to finish with two more personal thoughts the first of which is anecdotal; an “epiphany moment” for me - Lobster. It’s the only time that we are cooking meat we eat while it’s still alive. We hunt and trap many other animals for food. Yes, even if we’re killing them ourselves they are dead when we prepare them for consumption in whatever way. We don’t throw live fish into a frying pan. We don’t stuff a living chicken or lamb into an oven.
Perhaps most of us have wondered if lobsters feel pain as (There are mountains of differing scientific findings on this also) we’re pre-meditatively murdering them by scalding. But we comfort ourselves by assuming they must die quickly.

I probably used to consume this crustacean only 2 or 3 times a year. The last time I had it
as I quickly slammed down the lid on the giant pot one wayward antenna remained outside it twitching for a few seconds. That made me think. A lot. No more lobster for me…

I also have a “beef” with how a lot of vegan food is marketed. I know I’m splitting hairs here and even a few vegans have told me I’m nuts.
(After first telling me five times that they’re vegan, of course…) Even though the purpose is to refrain from even the idea of eating meat we see vegan burgers, vegan chicken wings, vegan franks and cheeses, tofurkey, cauliflower “steaks”, etc. This only serves to show how ingrained meat consumption is in our culture and in our being. Even though these foods are meatless they still possess a reference to meat itself! How is that going to help? Don’t market plant-based food while holding on to some type of meat reference!

The first thing we need to improve our health, the health of the planet, and the welfare of animals is thought! Lots
